Leadership

Meet the people who keep our club running.

President, Fall 2022

"I would rather have questions that can't be answered than answers that can't be questioned." - Richard Feynman

Major: Political Science
Dorm: Duncan Hall
Why he became involved: My involvement with BridgeND rests on my conviction that in order to strengthen and maintain our republic, we must actively engage with people who hold differing views and see the world differently than ourselves. In the current political climate, constructive political discourse is often not incentivized, but it is needed more than ever. I'm humble in my acknowledgement that one conversation won't magically solve all our problems, but confident that it can help us better empathize with others and orient us towards solution-oriented approaches to the unprecedented challenges we face. BridgeND's greatest strength is not moderation but the willingness of its members to communicate their strong convictions with others. My desire to learn something new and better articulate my beliefs keeps me coming back each time.

Isabel Olesinski

President, Spring 2023

"Though she be but little, she is fierce." - William Shakespeare

Major: Political Science, English
Dorm: Johnson Family Hall
Why she became involved:
Instead of drifting apart and separating ourselves from one another, people need to do their best to work together in order to create a better country for Americans. There's isolation, extremism, and fear present in society, and the only way to help ourselves is to start working together, not against each other. Notre Dame has such a diverse political climate, which often causes tensions to run high amongst ourselves. Just like in the U.S., we need bipartisanship more than ever to fight for a better future, and that starts with conversation.

"I'm a fun guy" - Kawhi Leonard

Majors: Electrical Engineering
Dorm: Siegfried Hall
Why he became involved:
I joined BridgeND because I was interested in having serious but respectful political conversations. Coming to Notre Dame, I was eager to both learn about the different sides of politics and refine my own beliefs. As an engineer, I wasn't sure if I would have an outlet to do so, but I found Bridge and never looked back.

Ashlyn Poppe

Director of Operations, Fall 2022 - Spring 2023

"Fight for the things you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you." - Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Majors: Global Affairs
Dorm: Pasquerilla West Hall
Why she became involved:
We live in an age undeniably marked by the polarization of American society. It is the duty of young people to engage in respectful, productive multi-partisan discourse to promote conflict resolution and collaboration. BridgeND provides a safe space for students of all political perspectives to join this dialogue and work towards a more United States.

"The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway... You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway." - Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Major: Business Analytics, Political Science
Dorm: Johnson Family Hall
Why she became involved:
I wanted to become more heavily involved with BridgeND because I am so passionate about encouraging open-minded conversation, particularly in the realm of politics. Coming from a more liberal city within a more conservative state, I have seen firsthand the importance of respectful bipartisan discourse. As such, I want to aid in BridgeND’s mission to embrace and encourage open-mindedness.

Aubry Schweiner

Assistant Director of Operations, Spring 2023

'If not me, who? If not now, when?" — Emma Watson

Major: Political Science, Pre-Health
Dorm: McGlinn
Why she became involved:
I enjoy learning about politics as well as listening/participating in debates, and I think BridgeND’s mission is unique and suits my interests. I hope to have more opportunities to explore the ins and outs of the political system and learn about the complexity of the political issues that arise today. I’m excited to meet more people who share these interests with me as I enter my 2nd year at ND!

Cian Conroy

Treasurer, Fall 2022 - Spring 2023

"And you will, by the dignity of your Conduct, afford occasion for Posterity to say, when speaking of the glorious example you have exhibited to man kind, "had this day been wanting, the World had never seen the last stage of perfection to which human nature is capable of attaining." - George Washington

Major: Economics, Applied Math
Dorm: Duncan Hall
Why he became involved:
The political climate throughout much of the country today is accusatory and distrustful. I think all people of good will have an obligation to take proactive steps in closing the divides that increasingly separate us. We need to turn the tide, talk to one another, and rebuild trust every way we can.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" - Eleanor Roosevelt

Major: Economics, Philosophy

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear." —Franklin D. Roosevelt

Major: History, Global Affairs
Dorm: McGlinn Hall
Why she became involved:
The bipartisan divide in our country severely inhibits our capacity to pass legislation that improves Americans' fundamental quality of life. And, I think the only way to reduce political polarization is to engage in respectful and civil conversations with people on opposite ends of the ideological spectrum. I got involved in BridgeND because I believe it's the ideal forum for those discussions. While we can in no way heal the nationwide volatile political atmosphere, at BridgeND we have the tools and drive to start.

"The biggest risk is not taking any" - Mark Zuckerberg

I joined BridgeND because I wanted to engage in healthy conversations finding common ground on divisive current events in a community of individuals eager to make a difference.

"Act as if what you do makes a difference. IT DOES." - William James

Major: Political Science
Dorm: Johnson Family Hall
Why she became involved:
I genuinely believe BridgeND is the best club for garnering thought-provoking political discussion. Finding commonalities with people who hold different opinions from you is what our Nation is all about. BridgeND provides students an opportunity to hear others’ experiences and grow from them. I am thankful for everything I’ve learned from my time in Bridge and have consistently used it to help me better shape my political ideals.

Lucie Kneip

Senior Advisor, Fall 2022 - Spring 2023

"Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it" - H.D. Thoreau

Major: Political Science, Global Affairs
Dorm: McGlinn Hall
Why she became involved:
I grew up in a conservative midwest community defined by implicit adherence to certain political priorities. There was an underlying belief that discussing issues outside of the expected clipped responses was deeply controversial and indecorous. If prompting respectful discussion makes one controversial, then we are failing as an American people to uphold our foundations of democracy and liberty. BridgeND has the intellectual potential and energy of driven young minds to spearhead a change in civic discourse. I am inspired by how many students across the country have joined the BridgeUSA movement and how willing young people are to listen to different perspectives. It all starts with the power of a simple conversation.
